Numbers don't lie. After tracking 1,600+ Wordle puzzles, certain letters show up way more than others. Knowing this changes how you play.
E appears in 1,230 different words (46% of all puzzles). If your guess doesn't have E, you're missing almost half the possible answers. A comes second at 975 words (39%). R shows up 897 times (36%).
Pro Tip: Notice something? CRANE contains five of the top ten letters. That's why it wins so often.
These letters are last-resort guesses. Don't waste early tries on them unless you have strong evidence.
Letter frequency changes based on where it sits in the word. E loves position 5, S dominates position 1, and A owns position 2.
Convert statistics into winning streaks with these three foundational rules.
Start with words containing E, A, and R in common positions. CRANE puts R in position 2, A in position 3, and E in position 5. Even if none turn green, you've tested three high-probability positions.
Second guess should target position 1 and position 4 if your first guess didn't. STOLE is perfect—it covers S in position 1, O in position 2, L in position 4, and E in position 5.
Avoid guessing words with Q, Z, X, J until you've exhausted common letter options. These letters appear in under 2% of answers combined. Don't waste early tries on them.
Your first guess should always assume 2 vowels. This accounts for the vast majority of Wordle solutions.
Adjustment Strategy: If you find 0 or 1 vowel after two guesses, pivot to rare single-vowel words like TRYST or LYMPH.
These letter pairs appear together constantly. Once you spot one, try the partner immediately.
Multiple valid answers that fit the same pattern. If you have _ATCH, you're stuck between 7 possible guesses (BATCH, CATCH, WATCH, etc.).
NYMPH uses Y as the only vowel and includes rare letters M, P, H together which are hard to predict.
Words like MUMMY or VIVID create confusion because players often avoid testing the same letter twice.
Words like KNOLL or GNOME start with silent letters that often waste early guesses.
Formal or technical words like FOYER or CAULK aren't everyday vocabulary for most people.
Common words like FIELD, BREAD, and SMILE appear in casual conversation all the time.
If you get _IELD, only FIELD and WIELD fit. That's a 50/50 guess instead of a 1-in-7 nightmare.
Five unique letters give you more information per guess, allowing for faster elimination.
Recognizing pairs like TH, ST, or CH helps you visualize and solve the word much faster.
